What's so Hard about Palm Tree Care?

What is so hard about palm tree care? Not a whole lot, actually. In general, palm trees are really easy to take care of. But if you plan to purchase a palm tree in the future, what should you know to make sure your tree does not end up sick or withering?

You should start by deciding whether you will purchase an indoor or outdoor tree. If you select an indoor tree, your options will be considerably restricted. You will have to select either a tree or a fern that does not grow too tall. If you are severely restricted for space, you might want to select one of the dwarf or pygmy species.

If, on the other hand, you plan to purchase an outdoor tree, you will need to consider how it will fit into the scheme of your yard. For instance, if you unwittingly purchase a coconut palm tree, its height might fit into the scheme of your yard, but the falling coconuts may not.

Additionally, once the tree is planted you will have to provide palm tree care - indoors or out. This care usually consists of three parts. The first important part consists of ensuring that your tree is planted in a sunny spot or near a window. Most palm trees respond very well to the sun. However, there are a few varieties that prefer shadier conditions - be sure to check with your supplier before you buy.

The second part of caring for a palm tree consists of ensuring that the tree is properly watered at regular intervals. The third and final secret of palm tree care consists of checking on and maintaining the health of the tree. This last task conveniently sub-divides into another three tasks.

The first task is to check the pH (a measure of the acidity or basicity) of the soil surrounding the tree. Different types of palms prefer different pH levels. Most garden centers sell pH testing kits and will be able to offer advice. The second task is checking the salinity of the soil, if the soil is too salty it may affect the health of your palm and stunt growth. The last of the three tasks is to conduct a visual check of the palm tree for disease and bug-related damage.

If you take care of these simple steps, you should get years of enjoyment and pleasure from your palm tree.
